JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs clinical laboratory tests according to established procedures in order to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes, interprets and ensures accuracy of test results.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1. Operates complex automated analysis equipment; certifies and
corrects malfunctions of equipment and instrumentation, and
performs regular maintenance in accordance with established
procedures.
2. Determines suitability of test samples, records test data, makes
statistical calculations, prepares test reports, and answers
routine questions with area of competence for medical personnel
and others.
3. Compares laboratory results with normal values and investigates
atypical results to determine cause.
4. Ensures proper preparation and replacement of chemicals and
reagents, evaluates new diagnostic kits and procedures,
participates in assuring quality control and performs efficiency
testing.
5. Assists in research, development and implementation of laboratory
testing procedures.
6. Records, calculates and plots known control values on technical
instruments to ensure their reliability and accuracy in reporting
results. Regularly cleans, performs routine maintenance and
calibrates instruments and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Successful completion of a medical technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).
EXPERIENCE: One year as a medical technologist.
OTHER: Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimen handling guidelines and procedures. Skill in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and sterilizers.
Ability to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlines; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
