As part of the University System of Maryland's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Competitiveness Initiative, the USM is hosting a STEM Symposium on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. This symposium is sponsored by the National Science Foundation in collaboration with the University System of Maryland Foundation.

The symposium will feature national experts on STEM teaching and learning and STEM teacher production, as well as highlight the work of higher education faculty and K-12 teachers who are currently engaged in P-20 STEM work throughout the state of Maryland. The major themes of the swymposium will be aligned with the broader goals of USM's STEM and Competitiveness Initiative: increasing the number of STEM graduates from our institutions, with particular attention to producing more STEM teachers for the State of Maryland.

Dr. P. Uri Treisman, professor of mathematics and director of the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin, will present the 2009 Langenberg Lecture April 22, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the Conference Center and Inn by Marriott, University of Maryland University College (UMUC), Adelphi, Md. The lecture will also serve as the keynote address for the USM STEM Symposium.

A pioneer in mathematics education, Dr. Treisman was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1992.

The Langenberg Lecture: Perspectives in Education was established in honor of Donald N. Langenberg upon his retirement as USM chancellor. Previous Langenberg Lecturers include Physicist and Nobel Laureate Leon Lederman; retired Lockheed Martin Chairman and current USM Regent Norman Augustine; and Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The lecture will be followed by the University System of Maryland STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Symposium, during which Regent Norman Augustine will lead a panel discussion to respond to Professor Treisman's lecture. Dr. Augustine headed the National Academy committee which authored the report titled, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future.
