USM Board of Regents to Act on Towson University Facilities Master Plan and Recommendations of Governor's STEM Task Force

- The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting
will take action on the Towson University facilities master plan and recommendations
of the final report of the Governor's STEM Task Force.
The public session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday,
October 23, in Ballroom A of the second floor of the Southern Management Corporation
Campus Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The center is located
at 621 W. Lombard Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
The board will not take action at this meeting on the use of campus
facilities for films shown purely for entertainment purposes. However, that
issue will come before the board at a meeting in November 2009. An exact date
for the November meeting will be determined in the near future.
USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan and June Streckfus, executive
director of the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, served as co-chairs
for the group that was charged with creating a "statewide plan of
recommended STEM actions that will ensure that Maryland's workforce and its
research and development infrastructure can support a nationally preeminent and
globally competitive knowledge-based economy."
Other action items before the board include:
New academic program proposals, including an
M.S. in cyber security at University of Maryland University College and a B.S.
in Integrated Early Childhood Education/Special Education: Infant/Primary at
Towson University;
Recommendations on the future of the USM
Graduate Program in Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Sciences (MEES).
Information items on the agenda include an update on implementation
of the Textbook Affordability Policy and Legislation.
The regents will hear reports from the councils of university system
presidents, faculty, staff, and students.
After the public meeting, the board will meet in executive session.
