$3 Million Gift from Clifford M. and Camille E. Kendall Family Fund to Establish Scholarships at the Universities at Shady Grove

New SG III Facility to be Named
in Honor of Camille Kendall
ADELPHI, Md. (October 4, 2007) - Board of Regents Chair Clifford M. Kendall and his
wife Camille have donated $3 million through their family fund to establish
endowed scholarships for students attending the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) in
Rockville, the University System of Maryland (USM) announced today. The endowed
scholarships will be targeted for students who demonstrate financial need,
great potential for success, and a spirit of community service. In honor of the
Kendalls, whose family fund gifts to USM have totaled more
than $5.3 million, the newly opened Shady Grove III (SG III) academic facility
will be named the Camille Kendall Academic Center.
"Camille, Cliff, and the
Montgomery County Community Foundation are great friends of USM and of
the
Universities at Shady Grove," said USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan.
"Not only
have they worked to expand USG's role as a regional higher education
center,
but they have established scholarships to assist students transferring
from Montgomery College to USG. This gift is just further demonstration
of
their tremendous generosity, and it is our distinct pleasure to honor
Camille
and her philanthropic spirit by naming SG III for her."
The Kendall Scholars program
will commence with six awards in September 2008 and will grow to 20 annual
scholarship awards by 2012. The scholarships will be given to students in their
junior and/or senior years and will total an amount equal to tuition and fees.
"Cliff and Camille have a
long track record of support for USG and for higher education," said Stewart
Edelstein, executive director of USG. "Most of all, they desire to see students
succeed, and these scholarships will put a higher degree within reach of many
students who have the will but not always the economic means to realize that
goal. Their commitment to USG is deeply personal and exemplary."
"Camille and I are very
grateful for the opportunity to support the students and the development of the
Universities at Shady Grove through the Montgomery County Community
Foundation," said Clifford Kendall, who has served on the USM Board of Regents
since 1999. "It is serving the vital role of making higher education more
accessible to the citizens of our region."
Kendall, the former chair and
CEO of Computer Data Systems, Inc., is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College
Park, and George Washington University. He is the past chairman of the board of the High
Technology Council of Maryland and the Greater Washington Board of Trade. He is
also the founder and past chairman of the Montgomery County Community
Foundation. He has served on the board of trustees of George Washington University and currently serves on the board of the University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc.
Camille Kendall is a third
generation Washingtonian and attended Wilson Teachers College in the District. An educator, she worked as a high
school teacher in Prince Georges County and later taught accounting in the adult education
programs of Montgomery and Fairfax Counties. Since 2001 she has been a member of the Montgomery
College Foundation Board. She is also active in PEO, an international
philanthropic organization that helps women who are in financial need return to
college. The Kendalls, who have been married 54 years, have four sons and 11
grandchildren. Together, they have long supported scholarships for USM
institutions as well as for Montgomery College through the auspices of the Kendall Family Fund of
the Montgomery County Community Foundation.
The Universities at Shady Grove
is an
innovative model for expanding access to quality higher education in
the Montgomery County region. USG is not one university-it is eight of
Maryland's top public universities providing full- and
part-time upper-division undergraduate and graduate degree and
certificate
programs at one central location. Participating USM institutions
include Bowie State University; Towson University; University of
Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore; University of Maryland,
Baltimore County; University of Maryland, College Park; University of
Maryland Eastern Shore; and University of Maryland University College.
At 192,000 square feet in
size, the newly opened SG III facility doubles the size of USG, adding 45 smart
classrooms, 10 computer classrooms, 2 open computer labs, 2 distance learning classrooms,
81 faculty offices, and a 20,000-square-foot library and media center. SG III
represents the leading edge in academic buildings and incorporates "green"
design and gold-level LEED® certification with features such as roof gardens,
an energy-conserving HVAC system, recycled building materials, and the use of
sustainable materials such as wheat board, cork walls, bamboo flooring, and
banana fiber tables.
