New Directors Announced for University System of Maryland Foundation Board

ADELPHI, Md. (February 9, 2007) - The University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. (USMF)
announces the appointment of five new members to its board of directors, elected
at its December 2006 annual meeting: Joseph V. Bowen, Jr. of Columbia, MD;
Thomas A. Bowman of Charlottesville, VA; Hugh F. Cole., Jr. of Garrison, MD; David
Mister of Baltimore, MD; and Tonia Pankopf of New York, NY. Elected to an initial
one-year renewable term, the new directors will contribute their expertise to
the Foundation's mission to attract and manage philanthropic gifts in support
of the University System of Maryland's institutions.
"We are excited to have such
talented and capable individuals join the Foundation board," said Walter R.
Fatzinger, Jr., chairman of the Foundation. "Their insights and experiences as
active alumni of USM universities and accomplished professionals will be of
great value as the Foundation works to reach the USM campaign goal of $1.7
billion by 2012."
Joseph V. Bowen, Jr. is a 1970
graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and holds master's degrees
in general administration and international management from the University of
Maryland University College (UMUC). He has more than three decades of
experience in business and facilities management and community/corporate
relations. Bowen began his career at UMUC where he rose to assistant vice
president of operations. Since 2000, he has served as vice president of administration
for the architectural and engineering firm of McKissack & McKissack of
Washington, DC. He has held several earlier board assignments, including the
Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce and the Alumni
Association-International of the University System of Maryland. He is a past
president of the UMUC Alumni Association.
Thomas A. Bowman, CFA, a 1972
graduate of UMCP, has spent 36 years in the investment profession, beginning as
a portfolio manager and securities analyst at American Security and Trust
Company in Washington, DC. From 1982 to 1985, he was vice president and chief
investment officer at Frank Russell Investment Management Company in Tacoma, WA.
In 1986, he joined the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts (ICFA) as vice
president in charge of its Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. In 1994,
he was named president and CEO of the Association for Investment Management and
Research (successor to the ICFA, now known as CFA Institute) serving until his
retirement in 2004. He has frequently represented the investment profession as
an advocate for the highest levels of ethics and professional standards before many
regulatory bodies and public forums in the U.S. and abroad. Bowman has served
as a trustee of the American Red Cross Endowment Fund, the CFA Research
Foundation, and the 9/11 CFA Scholarship Fund.
Hugh F. Cole, Jr., chairman
of Brantly Development Group, Inc., has been a real estate developer in the
Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area since 1975. Prior to forming Brantly,
Cole was an associate at Morgan Stanley and Co., Inc. in New York from 1970
until 1974, where he was instrumental in establishing its real estate investment
arm. Upon returning to Maryland, he established H. F. Cole and Company, Inc., a
real estate development, appraisal, and consulting firm in Columbia. Cole is a
1965 graduate of UMCP and received his J.D.
from the University of Baltimore in 1969. He has been a member of the
Maryland Bar Association since 1974 and was awarded the MAI designation from
the Appraisal Institute in 1973. He
serves as a member of the Board of the Columbia Foundation and continues to
serve as a Director of The Columbia Bank. He is also founder and president of
the Howard County Tennis Patrons, a 501c (3) established to develop a regional
tennis center at Troy Park in Howard County, MD.
David F. Mister, an attorney
specializing in criminal, civil, and administrative law, is a 1970 graduate of
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and a 1973 graduate of the
University of Maryland School of Law. A former Assistant State's Attorney for
Baltimore County, Mister has been in private practice since 1980 and is a
founding partner of the Timonium, MD-based firm of Mister, Winter &
Bartlett, LLC. Mister is active as a member of the Baltimore County Bar
Association, chairing several committees during his past 25 years of
membership. He has served as a lecturer and legal instructor for several
associations, including the Maryland State's Attorneys Association, Maryland
State Licensed Beverage Association, and Baltimore County Bar Association. He
is a past president of UMBC Alumni Association and University of Maryland
Alumni Association-International, respectively.
Tonia Pankopf, managing partner of Pareto Advisors,
LLC, has worked at leading Wall Street firms and is an experienced research
analyst and investment manager who also serves on both corporate and nonprofit
boards. She earned her B.A., summa cum
laude, in government and politics from UMCP in 1989 with a citation in
general honors, and has a M.S. in economics and international relations from
the London School of Economics. She began her career in investment
research in 1995 working as an internet and software analyst at Citigroup Smith
Barney. She was an investment banker based in London working in Deutsche
Bank's Technology Group in corporate finance and has followed the internet and
software sectors as a senior analyst and vice president at both Goldman, Sachs
& Co. and Merrill Lynch. In 2001, she moved to the buy-side and held
positions at P.A.W. Capital Partners, L.P. and at Palladio Capital Management.
She currently sits on the audit and valuation committees of Technology
Investment Capital Corp. (TICC) as an independent director and is a board
member of Centro Primo Levi.
The University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. is
a not-for-profit corporation separate from the University System of Maryland
(USM). It receives, manages, and administers donations given to support many of
USM's 13 institutions. Currently, the foundation oversees investments of more
than $800 million, which include its own assets and those of other affiliated
foundations within USM.
