USM Board of Regents Meets October 20
Board
will Hear Educational Forum on Excel Maryland Initiative, Vote on New Academic
Programs
Adelphi, Md. (Oct. 18, 2017) -- The University System of Maryland (USM)
Board of Regents at its next meeting will vote on proposed new academic
programs and feature an opening educational forum on the Excel Maryland Initiative.
The public session of the meeting will begin
at 8:30 a.m. Friday, October 20 in the Henson Ballroom of the Henson Center of the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), located at 906 Backbone Road, Princess Anne, MD.
USM
Chancellor Robert L. Caret and USM Vice Chancellor for Economic Development
Thomas J. Sadowski will present the educational forum. The Excel Maryland Initiative,
first announced in May 2017 by Gov. Larry Hogan, is a comprehensive, statewide economic development
strategy focused on developing new collaborative strategies to accelerate
growth in the life sciences and cybersecurity industries. The Excel Maryland steering committee
co-chairs are Chancellor Caret and Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J.
Daniels.
The academic programs include adjustments to
programs at University of Maryland University College (UMUC). UMUC is proposing
adjustments to specific areas of concentration, which would result in three
freestanding academic programs: M.S. in acquisition and contract management;
M.S. in cyber operations; and M.S. in strategic communications. The board also
will vote on a M.S. at Towson University in management and leadership studies.
The board will hear reports from the
chancellor, councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff and
students. The final public session item is a vote on whether to reconvene in
closed session to discuss items exempted from public consideration under the
Open Meetings Act.
These items include various personnel matters
(including presidential reviews), acquisition of real property, collective
bargaining, honorary degree requests, and any other items that fall under
categories specifically exempted from public consideration under the Open
Meetings Act. Background information and the full agenda with supporting
materials and the closing statement are available here.
