Dr. Antoinette A. Coleman to Join USM As Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Adelphi, Md. (July 25,
2017) -- The University
System of Maryland (USM) welcomes Antoinette A. Coleman, Ph.D. as its next associate
vice chancellor for academic affairs, starting at USM on August 7, 2017.
Reporting to USM Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and
Student Affairs Joann Boughman, Coleman's portfolio of responsibilities as
associate vice chancellor will include working closely with provosts of the 12
USM institutions; the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC); leadership
of the community colleges and independent colleges and universities; and the Maryland
State Department of Education. She will also work with members of the offices
of admissions, advising, transfer, records and registration, and financial aid
of all USM institutions.
Coleman has more than 25 years of experience in public
institutions of higher education. Since January 2011, she has served Morgan
State University as its assistant vice president for academic affairs and
professor of social work.
At Morgan State, she provided leadership to all disciplines
for academic program development, approval, and review; faculty policies and procedures; and professional
development. She also ensured academic programs' compliance with policies and
regulations, and provided leadership during Morgan State's accreditation by the
Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
Coleman has also served as dean and professor in
the College of Professional Studies at Bowie State University and in various
capacities at Norfolk State University and Coppin State University.
"I am thrilled and honored to be joining the Academic and
Student Affairs team at the University System of Maryland Office, and I am
looking forward to working with all of Maryland's public institutions of higher
education as we continue to serve the wonderful students of our state," Coleman
said.
As associate vice chancellor, she also will provide written
briefs, recommendations, and other support on critical and strategic issues
including (but not limited to) transfer, articulation, enrollment management,
and financial aid.

Antoinette's arrival," Boughman said. "In her broad range of experiences and
expertise across segments of higher education, she has proven to
be an effective collaborator, leader, and facilitator of
change. She will enhance the important work being done in academic
and student affairs across the USM."
Coleman will succeed Associate Vice Chancellor
Teri Hollander, who is retiring from the USM on Sept. 30 after a distinguished
career in higher education administration with the USM Office and the
University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
"During a span of 37 years
within the University System of Maryland, Teri has earned the respect and
admiration of many within higher education, K-12, and state government. Her
commitment to those stakeholders and students is unparalleled. She will be
greatly missed," Boughman said.
Coleman earned her B.A. in sociology (summa cum
laude) from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, her master of social work
in clinical social work from the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and
her Ph.D. (social work administration, policy, and research) from UMB.
