USM Institutions Celebrate 2017 Commencement Exercises
Bowie State
University Honors the Memory of Lt. Richard Collins III
Adelphi, Md. (June 1, 2017) -- University
System of Maryland (USM) institutions celebrated recent commencement exercises,
with students and families marking the culmination of years of hard work.
During
May 2017, the University of Maryland
University College (UMUC), an international institution offering degrees
largely online and via hybrid classes, completed its group of ceremonies offered in
the Far East, Europe, and U.S.
On
Friday, May 19, students, families, and friends of the University
of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) celebrated with a
wide array of formal and informal activities and ceremonies to mark the UMB
Commencement of graduates from the schools of medicine, law, dentistry,
pharmacy, nursing, and social work, and the Graduate School.
The
flagship University of Maryland, College
Park (UMCP) campus on Sunday, May 21 held its main commencement ceremony.
UMCP President Loh began the graduation exercises by recognizing and reflecting
on the campus tragedy earlier in the weekend, the death of a Bowie State
University student visiting campus, Lt. Richard Collins III. Updates on the
university's ongoing response to this tragedy can be found here.
Investigations into this development are ongoing and the alleged assailant
remains incarcerated.
The
degree for Lt. Collins was presented posthumously to his parents during the Bowie State University commencement
exercises on Tuesday, May 23. The Bowie State and greater USM communities work
to honor the
memory of this
remarkable young man.

the perseverance of its graduates, as "young and not-so-young" marked the
achievement.
The
University of Maryland, Baltimore County
(UMBC) held graduate school commencement ceremonies on May 24 and, for the
final time at the Royal Farms Arena in downtown Baltimore, held its
undergraduate commencement on May 25. With the completion of a new
172,000-square foot events center on campus, next year's spring undergraduate
exercises are scheduled to be held at UMBC. The Class of 2017 profile features a
group of standout UMBC graduates.
