USM Board of Regents Meets February 17
Board to Vote on New
Academic Programs, Hear Forum on Freedom of Speech
Adelphi, Md. (Feb.
15, 2017) -- The University
System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will hear an
educational forum on freedom of speech and vote on items previously approved by
board standing committees.
The
meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 17 in the Multi-Purpose
Room of Building II at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), 9630 Gudelsky
Drive, Rockville, MD.
The
speaker for the educational forum is William A. Galston, who holds the Ezra
Zilkha Chair in the Brookings Institution's Governance Studies Program. He has
also been a faculty member at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP),
where he was the Saul Stern Professor and an acting dean of the UMCP School of
Public Policy. A regular commentator on national news outlets, Galston is the
author of eight books and more than 100 articles in the fields of political
theory, public policy, and American politics.
Action
items before the board include approval of the Coppin State University
facilities master plan, three academic program proposals, and funding
authorization for repairs to Millennium Hall at Towson University.
The regents will hear reports from the councils
of university system presidents, faculty, staff and students. The board will
vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items that fall under
categories specifically exempted from public consideration under the Open
Meetings Act. These items include various personnel matters, acquisition of real
property, collective bargaining, legal matters, and any item requiring
consideration in closed session to comply with a specific statutory
requirement.
