Mark Graber, Ph.D., J.D., of University of Maryland Carey School of Law Faculty Named a Regents' Professor

Chancellor Robert L. Caret has appointed Mark Graber, Ph.D., J.D., to the
position of University System of Maryland (USM) Regents' Professor. The honor,
among the System's most prominent faculty recognitions, recognizes the
exceptional academic and teaching achievements of Graber, the Jacob A. France
Professor of Constitutionalism at the University Of Maryland Francis King Carey
School Of Law.
The honor was formally bestowed on Graber at a
meeting today of the USM Board of Regents, held on the University of Maryland,
Baltimore (UMB) campus where the Carey School of Law is based. He is the
seventh Regents Professor in USM history.
According to USM Board of Regents policy, "the
Regents' Professorship is established by the board to recognize one or more
faculty members whose record of scholarly achievement and potential for truly
exceptional service to the system and its institutions warrants appointment to
the most prestigious rank in the University System."
In the letter conferring this honor on Graber,
Chancellor Caret notes Graber's "record of scholarly achievement and service,"
and describes "the stellar and moving recommendations that were submitted
by your president and many highly regarded colleagues from excellent
institutions across the United States and in Canada."
Graber is one of the nation's best recognized and
most eminent scholars of the American Constitutional Development movement,
which integrates constitutional law, legal history, and government.
His leadership in the field has brought prestige
and attention to the Carey School of Law and the entire USM. Graber has been
part of the USM since 1993, when he joined the faculty of the University of
Maryland, College Park.
At UMB, he served as the Associate Dean for
Research and Faculty Development and is now the Jacob A. France Professor of Constitutionalism.
Professor Graber's nomination packet clearly shows that he is at the top of his
discipline at UMB and nationally. He is a dedicated scholar who has vast,
varied, and impressive scholarly writings, numerous prestigious honors and
recognitions, and scores of influential presentations.
The
appointment of Regents' Professor comes with a modest monetary award, which can
be used for travel, research or publication costs, or personnel and equipment
costs.
When appointed a Regents' Professor, the
faculty member is asked to take on several duties, including continued
participation in the advisement and/or instruction of undergraduate students.
The Regents' Professor presents annually a public lecture at a USM institution
and participates in other scholarly activities that advance the USM and its
institutions. These may include curriculum development (formal or informal
courses), faculty development, citizen outreach, or organizational enhancement.
