Catherine J. Motz Appointed to USM Board of Regents

Adelphi, Md. (July 7, 2014) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) welcomes Catherine J. "Cassie" Motz, Esq., as a new member of the Board of Regents. Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley announced the appointment on July 2, 2014. Her term is effective immediately.

Motz is the executive director of the CollegeBound Foundation, Inc., a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization, dedicated to fostering and funding the dream of a college education for underserved students attending Baltimore City public high schools.

Before joining the CollegeBound Foundation in January 2014, Motz was deputy chief of staff to Gov. O'Malley. She had also served as deputy legal counsel to Gov. O'Malley and as interim director of the Governor's Office for Children. She served in the O'Malley-Brown administration for seven years.

Motz is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School. Between college and law school, she taught at a public middle school in the South Bronx, N.Y., through Teach for America. After graduating from law school and clerking for U.S. District Judge James Robertson in Washington, DC, she prosecuted homicide and domestic violence cases and argued appellate cases in local and federal courts as an assistant U.S. attorney and served as a deputy attorney general for the District of Columbia government, representing the city's child welfare and mental health agencies.

Motz also serves as board president of Baltimore Outreach Services, a homeless shelter and job-training program for women in Federal Hill, and as board secretary for the KIPP Baltimore schools. She is a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee's Leadership Program. Motz has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and serves on the UMBC Public Policy External Advisory Board.

Her work at the foundation will bring important new perspectives to the board's deliberations."

A 17-member Board of Regents, including one full-time student, governs the University System of Maryland. Appointed by the governor, the regents oversee the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations; formulate policy; and appoint the USM chancellor and the presidents of the system's 12 institutions. With the exception of the student member, each regent is appointed for a term of five years and may not serve more than two consecutive terms. The student regent is appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed. Regents serve on the board without compensation.

The University System of Maryland comprises 12 institutions, two regional higher education centers and a system office.
