Chancellor William E. Kirwan's Statement on Coppin State University President Stanley F. Battle's Resignation
Stanley F. Battle, president of Coppin
State University,
today announced that he will leave Coppin in June 2007 to take the position of
chancellor of North Carolina A&T
State University
in Greensboro, NC.
Since joining the University System of Maryland as president of Coppin in March
2003, President Battle has worked diligently, deliberately, and successfully to
enhance the university as well as its surrounding community.
Under President Battle’s visionary leadership, Coppin has
garnered numerous awards in recognition of the university’s innovative use of
information technology, increasing opportunities for students, faculty, and
staff.
Also under President Battle’s leadership, Coppin has extended
its resources to the community, taking over the management of Rosemont
Elementary School and transforming
it from a failing public school to one of Baltimore
City’s best. The Coppin/Rosemont
Initiative has been expanded to include nearby Lemmel
Middle School and
Douglass
High School. In addition, the
university launched the Coppin Academy,
offering ninth-12th graders a rigorous high-school curriculum.
Thanks to President Battle’s dedication to broadening options
for students of all ages, Coppin has become a national model in delivering
education and advancing opportunities in an urban corridor affected by poverty and
crime.
On behalf of the University System of Maryland, I express
appreciation to President Battle for his dedicated service. I wish him much
success in his position at North Carolina A&T.
The University System of Maryland Board of Regents and I
will work closely with the Coppin State
University community on a smooth
search process and on its transition to a new leader who will continue to
advance opportunities for the university and its surrounding community.
