Board of Regents Special Review Committee on Coppin State University to Hold Public Hearing April 11
Adelphi, Md. (March
27, 2013) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Special
Review Committee on Coppin State University (CSU) will hold a three-hour public
hearing, beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
The hearing will be held in Room 108 of the Physical
Education Complex. Any member of the general public or the campus community is
eligible to sign up to speak at this hearing. The deadline to register is
5 p.m. April 8, using the online form at http://www.usmd.edu/regents/CSU-Study/RTS0411.php.
The
Board of Regents in December 2012 approved a proposal by USM Chancellor William
E. Kirwan to establish a special committee to conduct a comprehensive review of
Coppin State and develop strategies to enhance the university's future success.
The
decision to create the special review committee comes at a transitional time for
the Coppin State community. In October 2012, then-President Reginald Avery
announced he would resign his position, effective Jan. 22, 2013. The next day,
Mortimer Neufville, who was interim president of the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore August 2011-June 2012, began his current service as interim
president. Neufville is a former executive vice president with the Association
of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and current APLU consultant.
The
committee is chaired by Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, who has served as president
of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) since 1992. Hrabowski
served as the vice president for academic affairs at Coppin State before first
joining UMBC in 1987 as vice provost. The board asks that the committee
complete its work by May 15, 2013.
Faculty,
staff, and students should park as they would during the school year. Parking
for other attendees is available in Lot H. The CSU parking and transportation
department will have staff on hand to direct the traffic for parking and to
answer any questions and to address all concerns.
