USM Student Council Encourages Participation in Maryland Student Lobby Day, February 28
Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 7,
2013) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) Student Council is urging students
from all USM institutions to travel to Annapolis and participate in Maryland
Student Lobby Day on February 28. On that date, students from the USM will be
joined by students from other higher education institutions in Maryland to
rally in Annapolis in support of fully funding higher education in Maryland.
Maryland Student Lobby Day will begin with a planning meeting at 9
a.m. in Room 302 of the House of Delegates Office Building. Meetings with legislators
will take place between 11 a.m. and noon. As more details emerge about Maryland
Student Lobby Day, please look for updates on specific meeting room locations
and other details at http://www.studentsformd.com/schedule.html.
This year, Governor O'Malley included a
substantial investment in our colleges and universities in his budget. In
Maryland, once the governor's budget is submitted the legislature can only cut
funding to our institutions, not increase it.
The impact of reducing funding to higher education
institutions impacts not only the USM but community colleges and private
colleges because of the formulas that provide them funding.
Therefore, it is extremely important to come together
with one voice in favor of the budget as proposed by Governor O'Malley to
protect the affordability, quality, and accessibility of higher education in
Maryland for the people of Maryland.
In order to best coordinate the day's
activities, USM students are encouraged to register online at http://www.studentsformd.com/register.html. For more information about Maryland Student Lobby Day,
