USM Schools Among Nation's Best in Latest U.S. News & World Report College Rankings

-- University System of Maryland (USM) schools once again have been recognized
among the nation's top universities in the latest edition of U.S. News & World Report's
annual college rankings.
The 2013 edition of
America's Best Colleges released this month recognizes several USM institutions
for academic excellence.
The
University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) was ranked 19th among all U.S. national
public universities. The ranking marks the 11th straight year UMCP
has been named a Top 20 public university. UMCP finished No. 58 in the
overall rankings of national universities, private and public.
Notably, at a time college
affordability is one of the most pressing socio-economic issues in the country,
U.S. News recognized UMCP for having the
third lowest tuition rate among the top 20 public universities.
The A. James Clark
School of Engineering at UMCP was ranked 23rd nationally for undergraduate
programs, moving up one spot from 2012. The school's aerospace engineering
program was ranked in 9th place. The Robert H. Smith School of Business was
ranked 21st nationally, with eight specialties ranking in the top 25.

The
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) ranked No. 1 among
"up-and-coming" national universities for the fourth straight year. UMBC shares
the top spot with George Mason University. U.S.
News also ranks UMBC eighth on a list of the top national
universities "where the faculty has an unusual commitment to undergraduate
teaching." In this category, UMBC is tied with Duke University, the University
of California-Berkeley, the University of Chicago, and the University of Notre
Dame.

Towson University ranked 44th among 181 public and private north region schools. Towson ranked 10th among top regional public universities in the north region, an improvement of one spot from last year's rankings.

Salisbury University ranked among the top 10
public regional universities in the north. Salisbury was ranked 47th
among 181 public and private north region schools. This is the 16th
straight year Salisbury University has been ranked by the magazine.

U.S. News ranked Bowie State (27th
overall) and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) (33rd) in
its top tier of historically black colleges and universities in the U.S.
The University of Baltimore (UB) was ranked 23rd among public universities in the north region. The university routinely receives high rankings for programs at its School of Law and College of Public Affairs. The No. 23 ranking is an impressive ratings breakthrough for UB, given the recent launch of its four-year undergraduate program.
