USM Office Hires New Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Michael W. Bowden, former research analyst at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore (UMB), has been named assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs
in the University System of Maryland (USM) Office. He will assist Academic
Affairs with faculty workload reports, implementation of academic program
processes, and with meeting the requirements set out by last year's agreement
between the State of Maryland and the U.S. Office of Civil Rights (OCR) for
improving the USM's historically black institutions, including Bowie State
University, Coppin State College, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Bowden began his new position on August 6, 2001.
Charles R. Middleton, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, described Bowden as
"an excellent addition" to the staff.
"We will rely heavily upon Michael's expertise in institutional research
and public policy," Middleton said. "In addition, the OCR agreement
will be a major undertaking requiring close analysis and strong communication
skills. Michael excels in both those areas and a host of others."
Bowden, a native of Charlotte, NC, worked in UMB's Office of Institutional
Research, where he analyzed data and wrote campus reports largely focusing on
accountability. He created two data-driven websites for the institution, and
acted as a liaison between the campus's six professional schools and the USM
Office.
Prior to his position at UMB, Bowden served as a research assistant at the Urban
Institute in Washington, D.C., as a financial aid officer for Strayer University
in Washington, and as a project assistant for Unisys at the Goddard Space Center
in Lanham, MD. He earned a bachelor's degree in public policy analysis from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is completing a master's degree
in public administration at the University of Baltimore.
Bowden resides in Catonsville, MD.
