Board of Regents Elects New Officers, Approves 17 New Programs at
Annual Meeting
The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents elected a new slate
of officers and approved 17 new academic programs among other items of business
conducted during its public meeting at the University of Maryland Center for
Environmental Science's Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, MD.
The Board elected the following officers: Nathan A. Chapman, Jr., chairperson;
Charles R. Larson, vice-chair; Steny H. Hoyer, secretary; Thomas B. Finan Jr.,
treasurer; Louise Michaux Gonzales, assistant treasurer; and William T. Wood,
assistant secretary.
The Board also approved the following new programs: A bachelor of science in
nursing and a master of business administration from Bowie State University; a
B.S. in urban arts production and a master of science in reading from Coppin
State College; a B.S. in finance, a B.S. in marketing, a B.S. in management, and
a B.S. in exercise science, all from Salisbury University; a certificate in
advanced study in reading education and a certificate in advanced study in
organizational change from Towson University; an M.S. in interaction design and
information architecture and a master of science in health systems management
from the University of Baltimore; a bachelor of arts in music, a B.A. in dance,
and a combined B.A. in environmental studies/B.S. in environmental science, all
from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and a master of historic
preservation from the University of Maryland, College Park.
The Board also amended its policy regarding the selection of a student Regent to
ensure that the Chancellor and the USM Student Council work together to select
no fewer than three candidates from separate USM institutions.
The Board also approved a plan by Bowie State University to establish a
public/private partnership for the construction of a 300-350 bed student housing
facility on Bowie State property, to be ready by Fall 2003.
Finally, the Board was introduced to the Student Regent for Fiscal Year 2002,
Saleem A. Rasheed from Bowie State University. Rasheed is a senior majoring in
sociology.
