Finalists To Visit Campus March 14
The four finalists for the presidency of Bowie State University will visit
the campus on March 14.
The finalists are:
- Elvalee Banks, president of Mary Holmes College in West Point, MS
- Costel Denson, former vice provost for research at the University of
Delaware in Newark, DE and currently a faculty member in the College of
Engineering
- Calvin Lowe, vice president for research at Hampton University in Hampton,
VA
- Albert Walker, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City
State University in Elizabeth City, NC
Lowe will meet with faculty, students, and staff from 9 to 10:30 a.m.;
Walker will be available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Denson will meet the
campus from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and Banks will be available from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The meetings will take place in Room 102 of the Wiseman Centre on the Bowie
campus.
Bowie's Presidential Search & Screening Committee has forwarded the names of
the finalists to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and USM
Chancellor Donald N. Langenberg. The committee is made up of representatives
of Bowie State's faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as members of the
community. The president is expected to begin by June 1.
Walter J. Leonard, Bowie State's Wilson H. Elkins Visiting Professor, serves
as chairman of the committee. Wendell Holloway has been serving as interim
president since the resignation of Nathanael Pollard in December 1998. A.T.
Kearney, Inc., an executive search firm, has assisted the committee in the
nationwide search, which began in September.
Bowie State University is one of three historically black institutions
within the 13-member University System of Maryland. The new president will
be the ninth in the university's 135-year history.
