Advancing Postsecondary Student Success Through OER: A Statewide Summit on Open Educational Resources in Higher Education

Advancing Postsecondary Student Success Through OER: A Statewide Symposium on Open Educational Resources was a day-long summit that will brought together faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and administrators from across Maryland’s higher education institutions to explore the promise of using open educational resources (OER) to replace costly textbooks with affordable, high-quality learning materials while giving instructors the opportunity to repurpose content to meet their students’ needs.

The ABCs of Quality Online Learning Research: Applied, Beneficial, Centered

This workshop, co-sponsored by the USM William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation and Towson University's Office of Academic Innovation, will highlight opportunities for instructional design staff and faculty working with the Quality Matters framework to develop research studies related to learner success in online courses. Dr. Kay Shattuck, Director of Research for Quality Matters, will discuss recent findings in the field, then guide participants in applying the Quality Matters Research Toolkit to investigate student retention and/or learning.

Taking Student Learning Outcomes Assessment to the Next Level

The Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation and the USM Advisory Board for Graduate Education co-sponsored a system-wide convening on student learning outcomes assessment. National experts Natasha Jankowski (NILOA) and Daniel Denecke (Council of Graduate Schools) joined USM faculty, staff, and administrators for discussions on the “state of the art” of learning outcomes assessment across general education, undergraduate degree programs, graduate programs, and the co-curriculum.
